Description
For Lake Michigan lovers and lakefront enthusiasts, the Chicago Navy Pier Jigsaw Puzzle from Dowdle celebrates one of Chicago’s most historic waterfront landmarks. Construction began in 1914 on one of five proposed Chicago Municipal Piers, though only one was ultimately built. Originally intended for public use, the pier was requisitioned during World War I for Navy, Army, and Red Cross personnel from 1917–1918.
After the war, Navy Pier became a bustling hub of Windy City activity, drawing more than 3 million visitors annually during the roaring 20’s. The 1933–34 World’s Fair added to its popularity, and during World War II the U.S. Navy again utilized the pier. The University of Chicago occupied the space from 1946–1965 before the pier experienced a quiet period. Revitalization began in 1976, and renovations in the early 1990s restored Navy Pier as a major Chicago attraction. Today it features the nearly 200' Navy Pier Ferris Wheel, Pier Park, museums, shops, and sightseeing cruises. This 500 piece puzzle measures 16" W x 20" L when completed.
