Description
Dick Dale and His Del-Tones – Surfers’ Choice (1962) is the groundbreaking debut album that helped establish the surf music phenomenon. Richard Anthony Mansour, known as Dick Dale, became the King of Surf Guitar through his electrifying instrumental style and powerful sound inspired by the ocean.
Dale’s performances at the Rendezvous Ballroom in Balboa Peninsula (Newport Beach) between 1961 and 1962 are credited with launching surf music into mainstream awareness. His legendary “stomp” dances regularly sold out the 3,000-capacity venue, solidifying his influence in Southern California surf culture. Much of Surfers’ Choice was recorded live at the Rendezvous, capturing the raw energy of those early performances before studio overdubs were added.
Featuring classic tracks such as “Misirlou Twist,” “Let’s Go Trippin’,” “Surf Beat,” and “Surfing Drums,” this album established the instrumental conventions of surf rock and introduced the genre to a national audience. Reissued on CD in 2006 after being out of print for years, Surfers’ Choice remains essential listening for fans of vintage surf guitar and beach party music — best enjoyed loud and at the beach.
