Description
The King of the Surf Guitar: The Best of Dick Dale & His Del-Tones celebrates the explosive instrumental style that helped launch the surf rock genre. Richard Anthony Mansour, known worldwide as Dick Dale, transformed the sound of electric guitar by channeling the raw power of the ocean into music. Though originally from the Boston area, Dale’s move to Southern California and his immersion in surf culture shaped his signature sound.
Working closely with Leo Fender to develop amplifiers capable of handling his aggressive playing style, Dale created the reverb-heavy, high-energy tone that defined early 1960s surf music. This collection focuses on his instrumental classics, including “Let’s Go Trippin’,” widely recognized as the first true surf instrumental, along with “Misirlou,” “Surf Beat,” “King of the Surf Guitar,” “Riders in the Sky,” and “Banzi Washout.” The CD also includes a 1987 duet with Stevie Ray Vaughan on “Pipeline.”
Concentrating on Dale’s groundbreaking guitar work, this best-of surf rock CD captures the foundation of instrumental surf music. A must-play collection for beach gatherings and surf-inspired playlists — best enjoyed loud and at the beach.
